Dominican Republic to the auction of forest products seized

The border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic is considered the poorest country regionsn, both economically and environmentally. This is due to increased poverty and illegal reforestation associated with the area. In fact, it is quite normal for police officers to inspect the area and find tons of illegally produced forest products, which are then confiscated.
However, these materials will just go to waste if left to putrefaction somewhere. Why not make use of it and give the proceeds to the restoration efforts?
That's exactly what the Dominican Republic Agribusiness Exchange (BARD) and the Ministry of Environment (SEMARENA) are doing to help the country's efforts in forest restoration. They will be selling all wood, charcoal and other forest products seized for smuggling, according to them.
According to Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal and BARD President Omar Benitez, the sales proceeds will be forwarded to the "Towards a Green Border planting" in the framework of the Plan Quisqueya Verde (Green).
He said that the value of forest products can reach up to RD $ 60 million. Their purpose is to compensate for the auction as transparent as possible and to find the end of this illegal practice, making political use of all products seized.
As mentioned above, this side of the country is considered one of the most impoverished regions. It is fortunate to know that efforts are underway to address this deplorable situation. It's also good that the product will be sent to forest restoration. At the first hearing, the fate of the points seem desirable since they sell rather than eliminated, but hearing the end of the auction, I felt it was really the way forward.
Apart from environmental benefits, I'm really waiting for is the softening of the relationship between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Hopefully this is a step in that direction.
